Belmont Splits Series with Mercer

MACON, Ga. – The Belmont Bruins (7-33-0, 3-9-0) traveled to Macon, Ga. To face off against the Mercer Bears (21-21-0, 3-5-0) in a critical weekend in Atlantic Sun competition.  After dropping the first game of the double header by a score of 10-1, Belmont rebounded to take the second game by a score of 3-1.

Belmont struggled from the plate against Jessie Holmes managing only one hit in the fifth inning against the sophomore pitcher.

Mercer's offense exploded in the fourth inning when they were able to convert eight hits into eight runs. 

At the end of game one, Mercer had out hit Belmont by a score of 11-1.

In game two, Belmont and Mercer split runs in the first inning.  Belmont scored their run after Ashley Byers (Westerville, Ohio) singled to center field.  The hit drove in senior Brooke Babington (Johnston City, Ill.) from second base.

Belmont drove in their game winning runs in the third inning.  Senior Sara Bentley (Springfield, Tenn.) came through with a clutch hit down the right field line drove in Brooke Babington and Ashley Smith (Helena, Ala.) from second and third base.

After gaining the two run advantage, Belmont pitcher Devon Schmidt (Greenbrier, Tenn.) refused to relinquish the lead.  Schmidt struck out four batters en route to her fifth win in her last six starts.

Belmont and Mercer each had five hits in the contest.  Belmont committed one error in the game.

The Bruins will be back in action on Tuesday when they face off against Tennessee-Martin in a non conference match before hosting Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson the following weekend.
