GULF SHORES, Ala. -- The Belmont Softball team (0-4) was unable to hold off an early rally by Samford (2-3) on the final day of the Sand Dollar Classic. The Bruins fell in five innings, 10-1, to the Bulldogs.
BU was the first to get on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Kayla Wells singled to left to get things started and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jess Andree. Chelsey Deloney smacked a single to left center to put Wells over the plate to give Belmont the 1-0 lead.
The Bulldogs fired back in the top of the following inning, adding five runs to their tally. BU's bats fell silent for the next two innings before Samford repeated the feat in the top of the fifth inning, adding five more runs. Belmont attempted to rally in the bottom of the same inning but the effort fell just shy.
The Bruins tallied three hits on the day.
Inside the circle, Shelby Willard and Lexi Rouse split duties, combining for three strikeouts.
Belmont returns to action next weekend at the Louisiana Tech Invitational.
