MURRAY, Ky .-- Belmont Softball waged a massive extra inning comeback on the road at Murray State to take the final on Sunday. Fueled by a pair of late homeruns, the Bruins defeated the Racers, 5-3.
After a pair of silent offensive innings to open the contest, BU would make a mark on the scoreboard first in the top of the third. MSU fired back posting a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a narrow 2-1 lead. The home team held the advantage until the top of the seventh inning when Belmont used a solo shot from junior Audrey Lyle (Westlake, Ohio) to knot the score and force extra innings.
The 2-2 stalemate lasted for two innings before one of the teams was able to make a strong move. In the top of the 10th frame, back-to-back homeruns from Lyle and freshman Kaley Varner (Cumming, Ga.) netted three runs to put BU ahead, 5-3. In their half of the same stanza, the Raers were only able to plate a single run, handing Belmont its first extra inning win of the season.
Belmont returns to action on Wednesday at E.S. Rose Park. The Bruins host regional foe WKU for a single game. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Live stats will be available and the contest can be seen live on ESPN+ and on the ESPN app. Fans may also follow the team's Twitter account (@BelmontSoftball) for live, in-game updates.
