Box Score NASHVILLE, Tenn. - - Belmont University Softball dropped a 7-2 decision to Murray State Sunday at E.S. Rose Park.
After splitting Saturday's high-scoring doubleheader in cold conditions, the Bruins and Racers met on a gorgeous sun-drenched afternoon in the decisive game in the series.
With first place in the OVC at stake, Murray State got to Belmont starting pitcher Emma Summers with a lone run in the first and two more in the second inning following an RBI double from Logan Braundmeier.
The Bruins had a golden opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the frame as Abi Ledbetter and Emily Cockrill each reached base.
But Murray State pitching ace Hannah James got out of the jam by recording three consecutive outs.
Alicia Veltri provided strong relief to stabilize things and allow to the Bruins to work back into the game.
However, Murray State added a run in the fifth and a three-run sixth inning to take control.
Belmont stayed alive behind back-to-back doubles from Cheyenne Cavanaugh and Kristen Green.
The Bruin rally continued into the seventh as Veltri blasted her fourth home run of on the season, a solo shot to cut into the margin.
Gabrielle Givers followed with a pinch-hit double before James finished off her second complete game victory of the series.
Belmont (19-11, 10-4 OVC) returns to game action Wednesday vs. Lipscomb.
