Softball Drops 10 Inning Midweek Clash to the Racers

NASHVILLE, Tenn-- Belmont University Softball dropped midweek clash 1-0 to the familiar foe Murray State in a 10 inning pitchers duel. 

Both teams' pitching staffs combined for 33 strikeouts on the day. Maya Johnson recorded 20 strikeouts in nine innings. 

A homerun in the 10th inning from Murray State's Lily Fisher was the difference maker in today's meeting. 

How it Happened 
The Bruins' Maya Johnson earned the start in the circle today, not allowing a hit until the fourth inning. Johnson got out of the fourth on consecutive swinging strikeouts. 

Johnson posted at least one strikeout in every inning pitched striking out 20 of the 29 batters she faced. While she added only one walk to her season total. 

After a hard fought nine innings from Johnson, Summer's entered the circle as a reliever. Summers let up the second hit of the day, a home run from Lily Fisher to take the lead in the tenth. 

Belmont countered with their first hit of the day in the tenth inning, a double hit to the wall from Emily Cockrill. The Bruins were unable to bring her home resulting in the 1-0 loss. 

The Bruins defense remained strong throughout with fantastic plays from the third baseman Kaley Varner and shortstop Nicole Hughes. 

Up Next: Belmont will remain home to host Indiana State for a weekend series beginning Friday, April 14 at 5 p.m. CT.
