RICHMOND, Ky. - - Belmont women's soccer (1-1-1) faced former Ohio Valley Conference opponent Eastern Kentucky (0-2-1) on Thursday, Aug. 24, in Richmond, Kentucky. A second- half goal by
Kennedy Wise helped Belmont escape Richmond with a one-all draw.
Both teams had their chances in the first half to get on the scoreboard first. EKU's Erica Cox created enough separation from Belmont's defense to float it in goal. Maddie Murphy assisted on Cox's first career goal.
EKU led at the half 1-0, despite the Bruins outshooting the Colonels 7-6 in the half.
Belmont mounted several deep attacks coming out of the halftime break. The pressure eventually led to Belmont's lone corner kick of the half.
Avery Nowak's in-swing corner was received perfectly by a cutting
Abbigail Legg, and finished by a header from Wise.
Wise's first goal of the season, and second of her career, tied the match at 1-1, and gave Belmont a surge of energy following the 62-minute mark.
Nowak's assist is her second of the season and eighth of her career. Legg's assist is her first points as a Bruin.
The goal stunned EKU and left the rest of their strategy in shambles. Goalkeeper
Sarah Doyle made five saves in the match. The Bruins' defense never gave way to the late efforts of the Colonels.
The final score of the match was 1-1.
The Bruins return to action against Nashville-foe Vanderbilt on Sunday, Aug. 27. Kickoff from the Vanderbilt Soccer Complex is scheduled for 7 p.m. CT. The match will be broadcasted on SEC Network+.
