NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Snapping a four-match losing streak, the Belmont University men's soccer team defeated Covenant College 1-nil Tuesday night at E.S. Rose Park behind graduate forward
Case Cox's 53rd-minute goal. The Bruins (3-6-3), who found the back of the net for the first time since Sept. 15, tallied a season-high five shots on goal and surrendered only three total shots.
Â
Belmont recorded 12 total shots and conceded only two shots on goal against the NCAA Division III Scots (9-2-1). Controlling possession, the Bruins outshot Covenant College 5-1 in the first half and 7-2 in the second half while earning seven corner kicks.
Â
After a scoreless opening half, which included a near goal by Cox just seven-and-a-half minutes in, it took Belmont a little under eight minutes into the second half to take the lead. Senior defender
Alex Clayton fed a ball into the box and redshirt sophomore defender
Nate Mefford swung the ball over to an open Cox, who cranked in his first goal of the season.
The Bruins would threaten once again in the 66th when sophomore defender
AJ Elliott put a ball on goal that was saved by Covenant College's Eli Honeycutt.
Â
The Scots' last real scoring chance came in the 76th minute and Belmont allowed only one Covenant College corner in the second half.
Â
Both Cox and Mefford had opportunities to give the Bruins a second goal in the closing three minutes, but both shots were saved by the Scots' keeper.
Â
Graduate goalkeeper
Grant Calvert made a pair of saves in collecting his third clean sheet of the season.
