NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Softball Program (9-4) faced Lipscomb (6-8) in the Battle of the Boulevard this Wednesday. In their 15
th meeting, Belmont topped Lipscomb 9-6 to defend the boulevard. The Bruins have now won three straight against the Bison.
How it Happened
In the top of the first,
Emily Cockrill recorded an RBI single for the first run of the game. Lipscomb countered with a run of their own in the bottom of the first off a sac fly. The game was knotted at 1-1 heading into the second.
The Bruins were scoreless in the second, but the Bison were able to bring in another run to take a 2-1 lead heading into the third.
The Belmont bats got moving in the top of the third.
Nicole Hughes stepped up to the plate and added an RBI single for the Bruins.
Abi Ledbetter followed with an RBI single of her own. Hughes would later cross home due to a wild pitch. The last Bruin run of the inning was a result of a sac fly from
Indy Cockrill.
Alex Clesi entered the circle to relieve
Emma Summers in the bottom of the third. The Bison then went three up, three down in the third.
Lipscomb forced a scoreless inning for Belmont in the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, the Bison recorded another run to cut the Bruins lead to 5-3.
Both teams were unable to bring in a run during the fifth leaving the score at 5-3 going into the sixth.
Belmont broke things open in the top of the sixth with four runs.
Baie Ensio made a huge play for the Bruins with a 2 RBI triple. Hughes followed with another strong swing resulting in an RBI double. Lipscomb made a pitching change, but Belmont was still able to bring in a run off an RBI from
Kaley Varner.
The Bison scored in the bottom of the sixth with a home run from Tori Womack. The Bruins headed into the final inning with a 9-4 lead.
Despite two hits and two runners on base, Belmont was unable to score in the top of the seventh.
Lipscomb started to come alive in the bottom of the seventh. The Bisons added two runs and cut the Bruins lead to 9-6. Belmont finally got out number three to close the game and secure the win.
What's Bruin
- The Bruins drove in nine runs off nine hits.
- Alex Clesi collected the win in the circle for the Bruins. Clesi only allowed one hit, one run, and one walk in 2.2 innings pitched. The senior improves to 2-2 this season.
- Baie Ensio led Belmont with three runs, two hits, and two RBI in five at bats.
- Nicole Hughes recorded two runs, two hits, and two RBI in three at bats.
- Abi Ledbetter led the Bruin defense with six putouts.
