BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Belmont University Softball Program (10-6) traveled to Birmingham, Ala. Thursday for a rematch against Samford (3-17). The Bruins topped the Bulldogs improving to 2-0 against Samford this season.
How it Happened
Both teams struggled to get things going offensively. The game was tied at 0-0 heading into the bottom of the second. With a Belmont error, Samford would bring in a run to take a 1-0 lead in the second.
The Bruins responded with a run of their own in the top of the third.
Nicole Hughes added an RBI single to bring
Kylie Cunningham across home and tie the game at 1-1.
The game was knotted at 1-1 heading into the fourth. The Bulldogs were able to bring in two more runs to reclaim the lead at 1-3 in the bottom of the fourth.
Belmont headed into the sixth inning still down 1-3. With a Bulldog error and single from
Grace Gressly, the Bruin offense got moving in the top of the sixth.
Brenna Blume recorded an RBI single followed by a 2 RBI play by
Emily Cockrill to give the Bruins a one-point edge.
Indy Cockrill stepped in to the batter's box and added another RBI single for Belmont extending their lead to 5-3 heading into the final inning.
Hughes recorded her second RBI single of the game to add another run for the Bruins in the seventh. Despite runners on first and second, Belmont was able to record the final two outs and prevent Samford from scoring. The Bruins finished on top 6-3.

- Belmont recorded 10 hits and six runs.
- Maya Johnson collected the win in the circle for the Bruins and improves to 5-2 this season. Johnson pitched three innings allowing only three hits, one walk and no runs. The pitcher tallied four strikeouts.
- Nicole Hughes led Belmont with 2 RBI, two hits, and one run.
- Emily Cockrill recorded 2 RBI, one hit, and one run.
- Brenna Blume led the Bruins with seven putouts while Abi Ledbetter added five.
Up Next
Belmont will return home to host Iona (2-6) and UIC (6-14) this weekend. The Bruins and Gaels will clash in a Saturday doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. CT. Belmont will then take on UIC in a doubleheader on Sunday at 12 p.m. CT. Live stats will be available on belmontbruins.com. Sunday's game versus the Flames will be streamed on ESPN+.
