NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Softball Program (10-6, 0-0 MVC) hosted Tennessee State (4-5, 0-0 OVC) on Wednesday evening in their home opener at E.S. Rose Park. The Bruins walked away with a win over the Tigers in just five innings.
Maya Johnson recorded her first strikeout of the game in the top of the first to force TSU to a three up, three down first inning. Freshman
Rylee Spindler was the first to reach base for the Bruins after being walked in the bottom of the first.
Nicole Hughes followed with a single to shortstop.
Emily Cockrill took the batter's box and was hit by pitch to load the bases for Belmont.
Grace Gressly and
Brenna Blume would each record an RBI to give the Bruins an early 2-0 lead.
Lauren Luciani got in on the action with a 2 RBI single up the middle to extend Belmont's lead to four. The Bruins would continue to capitalize on Tiger errors to leave the first up 8-0.
Johnson retired three-straight batters in the second and third innings. The Bruins continued to hold the Tigers scoreless through the fourth.
In the bottom of the fourth, E. Cockrill drove in a huge 2 RBI triple to push Belmont further ahead.
Ella Bertucci entered the game to pinch hit for Blume and added a sacrifice fly to put the Bruins up 11-0 heading into the fifth.
TSU got their first runner on base in the top of the fifth after being walked. Johnson went on to record her 11
th strikeout to secure her second no-hitter of the season and an 11-0 win for the Bruins.
