ATLANTA, Ga. – The Belmont University Softball Program (1-3) took on Western Kentucky (1-3) and Eastern Kentucky (3-1) on day two of opening weekend. The Bruins finished the day 0-2.
VS Western Kentucky (1-3)
Nicole Hughes recorded a single up the middle in her first at bat of the day. The Bruins were unable to bring Hughes home leaving the top of the first scoreless. Western Kentucky's offense started rolling in the first as they drove in two runs.
Both teams saw a scoreless second inning leaving the score at 0-2.
Daria Haynie led off the third inning with a single to get Belmont on base. Hughes continued to take big swings and drove in an RBI double to bring the Bruins within one at 1-2 in the top of the third. Despite the momentum from the Bruins, the Hilltoppers added another run to extend their lead at 1-3 heading into the fourth.
Emily Cockrill added a double of her own in the top of the fourth but was unable to reach home.
Both teams slowed down offensively resulting in scoreless innings the rest of the way. Belmont ultimately fell 1-3 to WKU.
VS Eastern Kentucky (2-5)
After a pair of walks and an Eastern Kentucky error, Belmont had bases loaded in the top of the first. Despite the early movement on the bases, the Bruins were unable to bring in a run. The Bruins had a strong defensive outing in the first as they sat three straight batters.
Neither team was able to score in the second leaving the score knotted at 0-0.
The Colonel offense gained momentum in the bottom of the third to take a 0-2 lead heading into the fourth.
EKU built off their momentum to add three more runs in the fourth extending their lead to 0-5.
Freshman
Rylee Spindler had an impressive at bat in the top of the sixth to get the Bruins' offense going. Spindler blasted a 2 RBI single to bring Belmont within three at 2-5.
The Bruins eventually fell to the Colonels 2-5.
