NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Softball Program (17-7, 1-0 MVC) opened conference play against Murray State (8-12, 0-1 MVC) on Wednesday where the Bruins topped the Racers 3-0.
How it Happened
Belmont's offense heated up quickly in the bottom of the first.
Emma Barnes led off the inning with a single up the middle.
Brenna Blume later added an RBI single to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead heading into the second.
Maya Johnson set the tone early as she recorded four-straight strikeouts catching each batter swinging. The pitcher and the Bruin defense held the Racers scoreless through two innings.
The Bruins added a hit in the bottom of the third but were unable to bring in a run. The score remained 1-0 heading into the fourth.
With her third home run of the season, Blume extended Belmont's lead to 2-0 after the fourth.
Johnson continued to impress as she sat three-straight batters yet again in the top of the fifth.
Nicole Hughes drove in a huge RBI double giving the Bruins a three-point edge heading into the sixth.
Belmont continued to hold Murray State scoreless heading into the seventh inning where Johnson would throw her 17
th strikeout of the day to secure a 3-0 win for the Bruins. The pitcher notched a season-high for strikeouts in Wednesday's performance.
