CHICAGO, Ill. – The Belmont University Softball Program (29-10, 13-3 MVC) opened the weekend series at UIC (6-34, 2-13 MVC) with a 6-3 win Friday evening.
How it Happened
Belmont took an early 1-0 lead after making a strong offensive showing in the top of the first.
Rylee Spindler led the way with a triple down the right field line.
Emma Barnes later added a single.
Maddy Balsiger led off the top of the second with a double to center.
Baie Ensio would later bring her home with an RBI single. The Bruins took a 2-0 lead heading into the third.
Grace Gressly got the Bruins rolling in the third with a double to right.
Emily Cockrill later added an RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0 after three.
The Bruins continued to play aggressively on offense as they added three hits and one run in the top of the fourth. The inning featured a double from
Madison Dolecki, a single by Ensio, and an RBI single from Spindler.
Both teams faced a three up, three down inning in the fifth leaving the score at 4-0 heading into the sixth.
Ensio continued to have an impressive day at the plate as she added an RBI triple in the top of the sixth. Spindler followed with another RBI to give Belmont a six-point lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
UIC recorded their first runs of the day in the bottom of the sixth to cut into Belmont's lead at 6-2.
The Flames added another run in the seventh before the Bruin defense would prevent anymore to secure a 6-3 win.
