CHICAGO, Ill. – The Belmont University Softball Program (30-11, 14-4 MVC) fell 2-3 to UIC (7-35, 3-14 MVC) in the series finale Sunday afternoon.
How it Happened
Belmont's offense seemed to be off to a strong start in the first.
Baie Ensio recorded a lead-off single before UIC walked back-to-back Bruins to load the bases.
Grace Gressly and
Emma Barnes each added an RBI sacrifice fly to give the Bruins an early two-point edge.
The Flames responded with a run in the bottom of the first to bring the game within one at 2-1 heading into the second.
Maya Johnson recorded two-straight strikeouts in the bottom of the second to keep Belmont ahead by one after two.
Rylee Spindler added a single in the top of the third and Gressly later reached base off a UIC error. The Bruins were unable to bring in a run leaving two runners stranded. The score remained 2-1 heading into the fourth.
Neither team could plate a run in the fourth.
UIC threatened with two hits leaving runners in scoring position in the top of the fifth. Belmont's defense stepped up to record the third out maintaining their one-point lead heading into the sixth.
In the bottom of the sixth, UIC added two runs to take the lead and eventually the game 2-3.
