NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Softball Program (32-12, 16-5 MVC) wrapped up the weekend with a 2-1 win over Valparaiso (18-24, 7-13 MVC) to secure another conference series win. This series marks the Bruins' sixth MVC series win of the season.
How it Happened
Valpo quickly jumped out to a 0-1 lead after the first inning.
Belmont tried to work their way back in, in the bottom of the third after
Baie Ensio recorded just the second hit of the day for the Bruins. The senior dropped in a bunt before going on to steal second base. Despite finally seeing action on the bases, the Bruins were unable to plate a run leaving the score at 0-1 heading into the fourth.
Maya Johnson led Belmont in the circle for the day and started to heat up in the top of the fourth. The pitcher caught three-straight batters swinging to prevent another Beacon run. The Bruins remained down by one after four innings of play.
Both teams faced a scoreless fifth inning.
Valpo walked back-to-back batters in the bottom of the sixth to leave two Bruins on base. With the leading runs on base,
Emma Barnes drove in a 2 RBI double to give Belmont their first runs and lead of the day at 2-1.
The Beacons threatened the Bruins' comeback after getting two runners on in the top of the seventh. Johnson and the Belmont defense stepped up to secure the third out and claim a 2-1 win to take the weekend series.
