Softball Takes Game Two Against Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The Belmont University Softball Program (34-13, 17-6 MVC) bounced back to claim a 3-1 win over Missouri State (16-31, 13-10 MVC) in extra innings Saturday afternoon.
 
How it Happened
Similar to game one, Belmont took an early 1-0 lead as Emma Barnes drove in an RBI single. Missouri State responded with a run in the bottom of the first to even the score at 1-1 heading into the second.
 
Maddy Balsiger recorded a double in the top of the second but was unable to reach home. The score remained tied after two innings of play.
 
Both teams faced a three up, three down inning in the third.
 
In the bottom of the fourth, the Bears threatened with a runner in scoring position. Ellie Giles and the Bruin defense stepped up to prevent the Missouri State run leaving the game knotted at 1-1 heading into the fifth. 
 
Belmont's defense left Missouri State without a hit or run in the fifth and sixth to keep the game tied going into the seventh.
 
Emily Cockrill added a double to left in the top of the seventh but couldn't reach home. The Bears were unable to plate a run in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.
 
Rylee Spindler gave the Bruins the lead off an RBI single in the top of the eighth. Barnes followed with her second RBI of the day as Belmont took a two-point lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
 
The Bruins were able to hold off the Bears in extra innings to claim a 3-1 win.
