NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With under 20 seconds remaining in the match, the Belmont University men's soccer team looked destined for a 1-nil victory over visiting Presbyterian College Sunday afternoon at E.S. Rose Park. However, the Blue Hose (3-2-2) scored as time expired to escape the Music City with a 1-1 draw.
Â
Earning their third consecutive 1-1 draw, the Bruins (3-0-3) took a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute following redshirt sophomore forward
Lucas Wolthers' first career score.
Â
With the tie, Belmont extends its unbeaten streak to a program-best eight matches dating back to Oct. 25 of last year.
Â
Presbyterian got a free kick on a whistled foul with about 17 seconds to go, and Blue Hose goalkeeper Tim Baerwalde launched the ball into the box from well beyond the midfield line. After a couple head touches, including graduate defender
Parker Forbes' attempt to get the ball out, Presbyterian's Samuel Murar was able to strike the inside of the near post as the clock hit zeros. The ball glanced off the post and into the back of the net, stealing two points away from the Bruins.
Â
Prior to the Blue Hose's last-second effort, graduate goalkeeper
Grant Calvert kept Presbyterian out of the net with a pair of fantastic saves in the 65th and 88th minutes.
Following a scoreless opening 45 minutes of action, it took Belmont less than a minute to get on the board in the second half. Senior midfielder
Oscar Hough passed the ball off to Wolthers just inside the 18-yard line and Wolthers lined up a beauty, driving the ball into the lower right corner of the goal.
Wolthers' score was the Bruins' lone shot on goal of the afternoon.
Â
A little over three minutes into the match, sophomore midfielder Louis Peña hit the top of the frame on a drive into the box.
Â
The Blue Hose finished with nine total shots, including six on target. Four of Presbyterian's shots on goal came in the second half.
Â
Belmont did not earn a second-half corner, and the Blue Hose tallied five corners, including three in the second stanza.
Â
There were no cautions issued, and Calvert came up with five saves.
