STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Belmont University Softball team wrapped up day two of the Bulldog Invitational with a split on Saturday, defeating Samford 3-1 before falling to No. 18 Mississippi State Bulldogs, 4-1. The Bruins finished the weekend with a strong 3-1 overall record in Starkville.Â
VS Samford (3-1)Â
Belmont earned its second win over Samford this season, using timely hitting and dominant pitching to secure a 3-1 victory in the first game of the day.Â
The Bulldogs struck first with a solo home run in the top of the first, but the Bruins settled in defensively and kept Samford off the board the rest of the game. Belmont's offense broke through in the top of the fifth when Rylee Spindler doubled to left center, allowing Emily Konz to score and even the game. The Bruins sealed the win in the seventh as Nicole Hughes launched a two-run home run down the left field line, scoring both herself and Spindler to give Belmont a 3-1 advantage.Â
Maya Johnson continued her stellar weekend in the circle, earning her sixth win of the season. She tossed a complete game, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out 12 to improve to 6-0 on the year.Â
VS No. 18 Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-4)Â
Belmont faced Mississippi State for the second time of the weekend in the finale. The Bulldogs capitalized early, scoring in the bottom of the first on a steal of home via a wild pitch and again on a throwing error, with three of the four runs coming unearned.Â
Mississippi State added another run in the bottom of the third to extend its lead. Belmont responded in the fourth when Rylee Spindler crossed the plate on an RBI single from Lizzie Ozim to cut into the deficit.Â
Spindler also made her presence known defensively, recording a key double play from third to first in the second inning and finishing the game with five total catches, three putouts, and two assists.Â
In the circle, Hannah Leierer started for the Bruins, pitching 3.2 innings, before Ellie Giles came on in relief and held the Bulldogs scoreless over 1.2 innings.Â
