NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Despite putting together a valiant effort in singles play, the Belmont University women's tennis team came up empty handed against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga Friday evening at the Ensworth Tennis Center in Nashville. The visiting Mocs (8-1) took all possible seven points, but not without plenty of resistance across all six singles courts.
Â
The Bruins (1-7) dropped No. 2 and No. 3 doubles, 6-2 and 6-3, respectively, before winning second sets at No. 2 and No. 6 singles.
Â
Junior
Emma Grant was edged 7-4 in a third-set tiebreaker by Chattanooga's Jordan Fenton at sixth singles after winning set two, 6-4.
Â
Freshman
Mia Jones recovered from a 7-5 opening set loss with a 7-5 second set win but fell 10-2 in a super tiebreaker in lieu of the third set to the Mocs' Rufaro Magarira at the No. 2 spot.
Â
Both redshirt freshman
Savannah Webster at the top of the singles lineup and senior
Libbie Hamilton at No. 5 singles pushed their opponents to second-set tiebreakers.
Â
At No. 1 doubles, the duo of Webster and sophomore
Jessica Popiol were trailing 4-3 when Chattanooga clinched the opening point.
