Sean Cahill joins the Belmont volleyball program with nearly two decades of coaching experience at the NCAA Division I and club levels.
Most recently, Cahill worked in private business, providing consulting and leadership development services. Prior to that, he served as an assistant coach at Marshall, where he helped the Thundering Herd earn wins over Georgetown, Saint Louis, Charlotte, UAB, Florida International, Southeastern Louisiana and Northern Kentucky. Marshall led Conference USA in blocks and ranked fourth in hitting percentage during his tenure, while outside hitter Ciara DeBell earned AVCA All-Region and First Team All-CUSA honors.
Cahill spent six seasons as an assistant coach at UC San Diego, helping the Tritons make two NCAA West Regional appearances and earn 11 victories over nationally ranked opponents. He coached six AVCA All-America selections during his time with the program, including First Team All-American Danielle Dahle.
He began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Loyola Chicago, helping the Ramblers make a 13-win improvement in 2012 and advance to the Horizon League Tournament semifinals. Four Loyola players earned All-Horizon League honors that season.
At the club level, Cahill served as director and head coach of the San Diego Wave Volleyball Club from 2015-19, leading the program to first-place finishes in the 18s division at both the JVA World Challenge and JVA West Coast Cup in 2016. He previously served as head coach of San Diego Volleyball Club from 2010-12 and led Seaside Volleyball Club, a premier men's program in the United States. His Seaside 15s team placed 11th at the 2012 Junior Nationals.
Before moving to California, Cahill was head coach of Chicago Bounce Volleyball Club and a volunteer assistant coach at Glenbard East High School in Illinois from 2008-10.
Cahill began his coaching career as a player and coach with the men's club volleyball program at Ball State from 2006-08. As a player, he helped the Cardinals place 11th at the 2008 NIRSA Division I-AA Championships and 21st in 2007, while also serving as head coach and vice president of the program.
A native of the Chicago area, Cahill earned a bachelor's degree in physical education from Ball State in 2008, with minors in adapted physical education and multicultural education. He earned a master's degree in coaching and administration from Concordia University Irvine in 2016 and was a member of the Dean's Honor List as an undergraduate.
