Box Score CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. – Belmont University Softball fell to Southeast Missouri 3-1 in an exciting day at the Southeast Softball Complex. The Bruins are now 30-13 on the season and 20-6 in conference.
A jam-packed first inning, Cheyenne Cavanaugh started off the Bruins with a popped ball falling in right center field for a base hit. On a wild pitch Cavanaugh reached second. Ledbetter came in clutch after SEMO pitcher Rachel Rook struck out two Bruins. Ledbetter ripped a triple, her first of the season down the left field line to bring home Cavanaugh.
Redhawk, Aubrey Shore slammed a three run homerun in the bottom of the first to take the lead over the Bruins, 3-1.
A scoreless next 6 innings for both Belmont and SEMO, three Bruins were able to reach base on walks in the third and fourth innings but they were unable to capitalize on their bases.
Bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth for the Redhawks, the Bruins were able to successfully get out of the inning finalized by none other than an Emma Summers' strikeout.
Top of the fifth two outs Cavanaugh with a double straight down the right field line to secure a runner in scoring position. The Bruins were unable to bring her home.
Top of the seventh Audrey Lyle walked for the Bruins, Indy Cockrill came into pinch run. Ensio moved Cockrill with a sacrifice bunt. Cavanaugh at bat, secured herself another base with a single to left field. Unfortunately, the Bruins couldn't bring them home ending the matchup.
The Bruins battled, today's matchup was extremely competitive, the Bruins posted one run on four hits, three of the hits came from Cavanaugh.
Up Next: The Bruins will face SEMO in a doubleheader May 8 to finalize regular season play.
