NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Softball Program (20-7, 4-0 MVC) wrapped up the weekend series against Drake (7-17, 0-3 MVC) with a 4-2 win. The Bruins' win marks their 20
th of the season extending their win streak to nine.
How it Happened
Maya Johnson had another impressive day in the circle that started with three-straight strikeouts in the top of the first.
The pitcher would catch three more batters swinging in the second to keep the Bulldogs scoreless through two.
Rylee Spindler added a single to left in the bottom of the inning but was unable to reach home. The score remained knotted at zeros heading into the third.
Neither team could get their offense going in the third leaving the score at 0-0.
Drake ended the scoring drought and took a 0-1 lead in the fourth off an RBI double from Frankie Rita.
The Bruin bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth.
Baie Ensio led the way with a single to center before
Emma Barnes would drive in a 2 RBI double giving Belmont the lead at 2-1. The Bruins continued to stay hot as
Nicole Hughes recorded her first home run of the season. Hughes' home run brought in two runs extending Belmont's lead to 4-1 heading into the sixth.
The Bulldogs responded with a home run of their own making the score 4-2 heading into the final inning.
Johnson went on to record her 17
th strikeout of the day in the top of the seventh as Belmont held on to claim a 4-2 win over Drake securing a series sweep.
