NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Belmont University Softball Program (16-7, 0-0 MVC) wrapped up an undefeated weekend after sweeping a doubleheader against Brown (7-5, 0-0 Ivy) on Sunday afternoon. Belmont's wins over Brown extends their win streak to five as they move from non-conference play to Valley play this week.
Game 1 (8-0, 5 inn.)
Belmont got on the board early in the first off a huge RBI triple from
Rylee Spindler.
The Bruin bats continued to heat up as they added two more runs in the bottom of the second. The two runs came curtesy of a 2 RBI single from
Nicole Hughes. Belmont headed into the third up 3-0.
Both teams saw a one-two-three inning in the third to leave the Bruins up by three.
Belmont broke the game wide open in the bottom of the fourth. Brown walked three-straight batters to leave the bases loaded with Bruins. Spindler continued to have an impressive day at the plate as she drove in a 2 RBI single up the middle.
Emily Cockrill later got in on the action with a 2 RBI single of her own. The Bruins took a 7-0 lead heading into the fifth.
Maya Johnson caught three-straight batters swinging in the top of the fifth to secure her second perfect game of the season and just the third in program history. The pitcher also notched her 100
th strikeout of the season against Brown. The Bruins headed into the bottom of the inning up by seven.
With two outs on the board, E. Cockrill stepped into the batter's box and drove in an RBI single to walk off the game. The Bruins claimed game one of the doubleheader 8-0 in five innings.
Game 2 (1-0)
The Bruins' offense showed no signs of slowing down at the start of game two. Spindler added another single to left before Hughes would add a double to put runners in scoring position. E. Cockrill continued to be an anchor for the Belmont offense as she recorded her fourth RBI of the day to put the Bruins up 1-0 heading into the second.
Despite the early action on the bases, Brown was able to cool the Belmont offense as the game progressed. The game quickly turned into a defensive battle in the second inning.
Belmont continued to maintain a one-point lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. E. Cockrill had another huge at bat blasting a double to left center. The Bruins were unable to bring the runner home leaving the score at 1-0 after four innings.
Mackenzie Willis made her first appearance in the circle for the weekend in the top of the fifth. The pitcher recorded two strikeouts to hold Brown scoreless.
In the bottom of the sixth,
Brenna Blume added a single but was unable to reach home. The Bruins held on to the lead heading into the final inning.
Belmont continued to put up a strong defensive effort to record the final three outs and secure a 1-0 win over Brown in game two.
